What is ESL?

(ESL) English as a Second Language is for speakers of other languages who want to develop their ability to understand, speak, read and write English. Richland One Adult and Community Education’s ESL students learn to talk with friends, salespersons, doctors, etc.; to read and talk about American culture; write letters and fill out forms; and use the new language in daily life activities. The ESL program also features cross-cultural and computer-assisted learning. At the end of the spring semester, each student receives a certificate (see photo above). The ESL program has students from approximately 25 different countries each year. Our program was begun more than 20 years ago.

 What Classes are Available?

 Day Program:

Grammar/Writing and Listening/Speaking are
offered for novice/beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels.
 
Reading is offered on beginning & intermediate levels. A computer lab is offered for all levels.
 
Night Program:
Listening/Speaking is offered for novice,
beginning, and intermediate levels.

 

Who Are the Teachers?

 

Each instructor is an experienced professional with a Master's Degree in Classroom Instruction and/or Teaching English as a Second (or Foreign) Language. Our teachers have had excellent university training in teaching ESL. They are paid professional teachers.

 

  When Do I Register?

Summer School Dates -

Day Program - We offer one of the only Adult Education ESL Summer Classes in Columbia.

 Registration: Thursday, May 28, 2009, 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Late registration: Monday & Tuesday, June 1 & 2, 8:30-11:00

Price: $50

Classes Begin: June 1, 2009 8:30-12:00

Classes End: July 2, 2009 

Classes are Monday through Thursday 8:30-12:00.

 Fall Semester 2009 Class -Morning and Evening ESL Classes

Possible starting date - Second week of September (September 8)

  Registration Information

 
 Use the doors in the center of the building on the Covenant St. side. Inside, turn to the right and enter the admissions office.
 
 You MUST:
    (1) fill out the forms,
    (2) pay the fees, and
    (3) have placement testing
    (grammar test and oral interview)
     BEFORE attending class.
 
 After the first day of morning classes, placement testing will be ONLY on Mondays & Wednesdays, 11:15 -12:30. (for fall and spring semesters)
 
 After the first night class, placement testing takes place at 5:20, ONLY on Tuesday nights. (for fall and spring semesters)

 Where are the Classes?

All ESL classes are at 2612 Covenant Road, Columbia, SC, across the street from the Midlands Shopping Center.(We're in the old Watkins School.) See map below.

We are on the public transportation (bus) route. To find your bus number and route to our school, go to www.goCMRTA.com Bus 16 starts at the downtown bus station at the corner of Sumter St. and Laural St. and goes directly by the school with no transfers. (You do not have to change buses.) It can stop at the corner of Covenant Rd. and Two Notch Rd., which is only one block from our school.

Option 1: Turn off Two Notch Rd. onto Covenant Rd. at the traffic light. The school is on the right, directly across from Midlands Shopping Center.
 
Option 2: Turn off Beltline Blvd. onto Covenant Rd., continue on Covenant Rd. approximately 1/2 mile until you see the school on the left.
